The Right Angle: Functional Alignment In Asana

Saturday October 19th 1-4pm

We can be drawn to yoga postures for their beauty or cool factor, and in turn, those postures can become benchmarks in determining success or proficiency in our practice. However, we may come to realize that we are unable to achieve the aesthetics of certain poses, or embody traditional alignment cues, no matter how dedicated we are. In Vinyasa or flow-based styles of yoga, some postures are held for only a handful of breaths. This can invite uncertainty around the specific actions required, thereby not creating the necessary strength and awareness to embody the pose. This can cascade into a “Simon Says” approach to practice; going through the motions and diligently following cues that may not make sense for our unique anatomical structures.

This workshop will take a close look at some commonly-taught standing postures, including Warriors 1 and 2 (Virabhadrasana), Triangle Pose (Utthita Trikonasana) and Half-Moon Pose (Ardha Chandrasana). This will be an opportunity to personalize your practice, as poses and transitions are explored based on their functionality, and not what they look like. You will find the “right" angle for YOUR unique body to attain the physiological and energetic benefits and reduce the risk of injury, ensuring new discoveries and longevity in your practice.

This offering is suitable for all levels, including beginners and teachers of yoga. Continuing education credit with Yoga Alliance is available.
